Before you approve any GE Lighting spec, verify three things: the photometric report, the driver/control compatibility, and the certification for the region. If those line up, the rest is installation detail. That's it. In 2025, I've rejected 9% of first deliveries because one of those three was missing or wrong.
I'm a quality/compliance manager at a lighting company. I review every GE Lighting fixture and control before it reaches customers—roughly 200+ unique items a year. I've watched a $22,000 redo happen because someone assumed a retrofit downlight would fit an old housing. It didn't. This article is the checklist I wish more buyers asked for.
Why I Check These First
The vendor failure in March 2023 changed how I think about 'good enough' specs. One critical deadline missed, and suddenly redundancy didn't seem like overkill. Since then, I've stopped trusting part numbers and started trusting reports.
For any LED product, I ask for the IES LM-79 report for the exact SKU. LM-79 covers total light output, wattage, CCT, CRI, and power factor. For lifetime claims, I ask for IES LM-80 data and the TM-21 projection. No LM-79? No approval from me. A DLC-listed product has to have LM-79 and LM-80 data on file, so the requirement isn't unreasonable.
That habit delayed one vendor's approval, but it saved us from a bigger problem later.
GE Lighting Canada: Certification Is the First Difference
If you're buying for Canada, certification changes the conversation. A fixture with UL only is not enough. In Canada, look for a CSA mark, cUL mark, or both to CAN/CSA C22.2 No. 250.0 for luminaires. GE Lighting Canada isn't a different product line—it's the same global brand with region-specific SKUs, and the certification needs to match the province.
For a wireless smart outdoor camera, check the operating temperature range, not just the camera resolution. Some wireless cameras are rated to -20°C. If your site sees -30°C, you need a different model or a wired power supply.
Retrofit Downlight: The Housing Is the Real Spec
It's tempting to think a retrofit downlight is just a bulb with a trim. It isn't. The housing matters as much as the LED module. Check the housing manufacturer, model, wattage rating, and IC/air-tight rating. Many old cans are built for 65W incandescent. A modern LED retrofit kit pulls less wattage, but the driver still runs warm. If the housing is in an insulated ceiling, it needs to be rated for the heat.
In 2024, I rejected a batch of 800 retrofit downlights because the mounting springs didn't clip into the housing. The gap was 4.2 mm against our 5.5 mm standard. Normal tolerance is ±0.3 mm. The vendor said it was 'within industry standard.' It wasn't. They redid it at their cost. Now every contract includes spring geometry.
The bigger mistake I see: buying a 6-inch retrofit downlight for a 4-inch can because the trim size ended in a similar number. No. Measure the actual opening. If it's for a bathroom, get a wet-location rated fixture. The LM-79 report tells you the photometrics; the certification tells you where it's allowed.

A Zigbee LED bulb is not a regular LED bulb with a radio stuck on top. It's a network node. That means it can extend a Zigbee mesh network for other devices—but only when it has power. If someone switches it off at the wall, it stops repeating. So don't design a Zigbee mesh around bulbs that will be off most of the day.
Check the protocol version, too. Zigbee 3.0 is the common standard. Older Zigbee HA 1.2 devices can work, but not always with newer controllers. If you're using a GE Lighting smart system, choose the Zigbee SKU that lists Zigbee 3.0. If you're integrating with a third-party hub, test one bulb before ordering the lot. Compatibility lists are usually accurate. Usually isn't a spec.
A Zigbee LED from GE Lighting is a solid choice when you want a local network that doesn't depend on Wi-Fi bandwidth. It's a different mental model from a Wi-Fi bulb; Zigbee forms a mesh, and the coordinator handles the network map.

This is where I see the same failure every year: people mount the camera before checking the PIR detection range. The mounting height in the instructions is there for a reason. At 12 feet, the PIR detection zone at ground level is smaller than at 7 feet. You end up with a camera that logs every squirrel and misses the actual delivery.
For a wireless model, battery behavior matters. Lithium-ion batteries lose capacity in Canadian winters. If the camera faces an open driveway in January, expect shorter battery intervals. Some GE Lighting wireless camera kits accept a solar panel; use it if the mount is exposed.
Connect the camera to the 2.4 GHz network, not the guest network. If the video drops, it's usually Wi-Fi coverage, not the camera. Check the IP rating before installation. IP65 is fine for rain; it isn't a promise against standing water or ice dam bursts.
How Many Lumens Is a Grow Light? (And Why Lumens Are Only Half the Answer)
Short answer: for a single grow light covering a 2x2 ft shelf of leafy greens, aim for 3,000-5,000 lumens at the canopy. Fruiting plants need more light, so think 8,000-12,000 lumens for the same area, or better, check PPFD.
Here's the thing: lumens measure what your eye sees, not what the plant uses. A grow light's real spec is PPF and PPFD. PPF is the number of photons the fixture emits per second. PPFD is how many photons land on the plant. Lumens can still be useful as a rough comparison, but two lights with identical lumens can grow plants differently because of spectrum and distribution.
If someone asks me 'how many lumens is a grow light,' I always ask: what plants, what area, and from what distance? Then I point them to the PPFD map. If you're looking at a GE Lighting grow light, the same rule applies: read the PPFD map, not just the lumen number.
When You Can Skip Half of This List
The full checklist is for B2B orders and multi-unit installs. If you're swapping one bulb at home, you don't need a DLC report. Check the base, size, dimming, color temperature, and whether the fixture is enclosed-rated. That's enough.
And if you're troubleshooting existing GE Lighting gear, start with the controller and driver before re-specifying. Bad Zigbee pairing looks like a bad bulb, but it's usually a network problem.
I'm not saying specs are the only thing. A product that meets every spec but arrives damaged still fails. Packaging, handling, and installation practice matter. But those are easier to fix than a spec mismatch discovered after 10,000 units are on site.
I'd rather spend 10 minutes explaining options than deal with mismatched expectations later.
Even after choosing a new Zigbee coordinator, I kept second-guessing whether I should've bought the Wi-Fi version. The week until the first pairing test was stressful. It paired in five minutes. That doesn't make every decision easy. It just means the homework was worth it.
So before you approve that GE Lighting purchase order, ask for the LM-79, check the certification, and confirm the control protocol. Start there. If you're in Canada, start with CSA/cUL. If you're choosing a retrofit downlight, start with the housing. If you're asking 'how many lumens is a grow light,' start with the plant's PPFD requirement.
