If you've ever compared 4 inch vs 6 inch recessed lighting in bedroom debates online, you know how much advice disagrees. Then add a smart dimmer and a chandelier to the plan, and the answer gets even messier. I review lighting specs for a living—commercial orders, multi-family buildings, the occasional high-end residential job. In 2024, I rejected about 14% of the first deliveries I reviewed. The rejections weren't because the manufacturers were unreliable. They were because the pieces of the spec didn't fit together. The GE Lighting holiday sale is a good time to buy, but only if you know which scenario you're in.
Here's what you need to know: there is no universal answer. There are three common situations. The right choice for one is the wrong choice for another.
Three situations, one question
Scenario one: you are picking recessed downlights for a bedroom in a home or apartment. Scenario two: you are a contractor or property manager buying commercial GE Lighting fixtures and want smart dimming across a building. Scenario three: you are choosing a decorative chandelier—often from a dedicated chandelier company—and you still need the whole room to dim properly.
These are not the same decision. Let's look at each one.
Scenario 1: 4 inch vs 6 inch recessed lighting in a bedroom
The bedroom is where ceiling height recommendations drive me crazy. For an 8-foot ceiling, 4-inch recessed lights are usually enough if you're not relying on them as the only light source. 6-inch downlights give a wider beam and more light, but on a low ceiling they can seem harsh and are harder to position without glare.
I had a project where the numbers said 6-inch: more lumens, lower price per fixture, fewer total fixtures needed. My gut said 4-inch because the ceiling was 8 feet and the room was 13x13. I went with the 4-inch fixtures. The finished space felt calmer. I still second-guessed myself for two weeks after the order—until the final walkthrough, when nobody mentioned the light count. They said the room felt comfortable. That's the outcome that matters.
But before you decide, check the existing ceiling. If you're replacing 6-inch housings, retrofitting 4-inch trims requires a new housing or an adapter. A cheap 4-inch fixture looks less cheap after you pay someone to patch the ceiling. I'm not 100% sure of your local labor rates, but the patchwork will probably cost more than the fixture difference. In that case, the 6-inch retrofit is the value choice, not the lazy one.
Scenario 2: GE Lighting commercial fixtures and Zigbee dimmer compatibility
Commercial is a different game. You need consistency across many fixtures, not one pretty room. GE Lighting commercial products are built for that kind of repeatability. The problem I see most often is controls.
A Zigbee dimmer seems simple. It's a wireless standard, so it should work with any Zigbee device. To be fair, most of the time it does. But 'most of the time' is not a compliance spec. On one project, we installed 80 GE fixtures with drivers listed as Zigbee-compatible and a Zigbee dimmer from another manufacturer. The first night, 17 fixtures wouldn't pair. It turned out the dimmer profile and the fixture's Zigbee endpoint didn't agree. We had to update firmware and re-pair everything. The fixture itself was fine; the combination wasn't.
So here is the commercial rule: get the dimmer model approved before you buy the fixtures. Ask the distributor if they have a tested pairing schedule. If they say 'should work,' that is not a confirmation. Take a sample dimmer to the job site and test it with one fixture. A one-hour mock-up beats a 200-fixture callback.
If you are using GE Lighting's smart ecosystem, keep it simple. The Cync line is convenient for scene control, but your fixture and dimmer must belong to the same control generation. Check the spec sheet for the exact protocol—Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or Zigbee. Don't assume that 'smart' means 'compatible.'
Scenario 3: chandelier companies and the decorative centrepiece
I have mixed feelings about chandeliers in lighting projects. On one hand, they are often the visual anchor of a room. On the other hand, they are the least flexible element when you're trying to make everything smart and dimmable. Many chandelier companies sell a fixture that uses candelabra-base bulbs, but some use integrated LED modules that require a transformer. That transformer can be a deal-breaker with a Zigbee dimmer.
My advice: if the chandelier is the centerpiece, plan the dimming around it. Determine the lamp type first. If it takes candelabra-base LEDs, you can usually swap in a dimmable bulb that works with your dimmer. If the fixture uses an integrated LED module, ask the chandelier company for the driver specs and the recommended dimmer. If they can't give you one, that's a red flag.
Also, don't choose a chandelier from a holiday flash sale just because the price is low. A chandelier with a 24V system may need a special transformer, and the transformer can cost more than the fixture savings. That is the opposite of value over price. I'd rather buy a slightly more expensive fixture that dims cleanly than spend the difference on an extra adapter and an electrician's second visit.
How to tell which scenario you're in
If you're not sure, use this quick check:
- If the project is a bedroom and there's an existing ceiling hole, start with the housing size. Then choose 4-inch or 6-inch based on ceiling height and light layering.
- If you're buying for multiple rooms or a building, you're in scenario 2. Prioritize controls compatibility and same-model consistency before aesthetics.
- If there is a chandelier in the plan, buy the chandelier and the dimmer together as a system. Verify lamping before you order.
In my experience, people don't regret buying quality GE Lighting fixtures. They regret skipping the compatibility test. So make a simple mock-up before the big order. Buy one fixture, one dimmer, one bulb, and confirm they work in the actual space.
Bottom line: value is more than the sale price
The GE Lighting holiday sale is a legitimate chance to save money. I'm not going to tell you to ignore it. But a discount doesn't change the fundamental rule: match the product to the project. A 4-inch fixture on sale is still wrong for a 10-foot ceiling. A Zigbee dimmer on sale is still wrong if the fixture doesn't speak the same protocol. A chandelier with a beautiful price tag is still a problem if the transformer won't dim.
Take it from someone who has rejected shipments over a 300K color-temperature difference: the cheapest way to buy lighting is to buy the right specification once. Get that right, and the holiday sale becomes a bonus, not a gamble.
