I manage lighting procurement for a 140-person electrical contractor. Or rather, it's a comparison of what those systems cost once they are inside a building, not what they cost on a shelf.
The GE Lighting catalog—the same one I pulled from in January 2025, and the one some distributor files list as ge-lighting—makes it look like a simple fixture choice. But the catalog lists products by family, not by installed cost. What I mean is that the fixture price is only the first line. The real comparison starts when you add track, canopy, housing, trim, dimming controls, installation labor, aiming labor, painting and the cost of the day someone changes the layout.
Here are the dimensions I use to compare. Four numbers matter: material cost; labor hours; accessory cost; rework budget. In that order.
Dimension 1: Material and Installed Cost
I used to think a recessed downlight always beat track on material cost. In 2024, we bid a 28-fixture downlight layout and a 16-head track run for a retail showroom. The downlight material quote came in about 18% lower. But once we added the housings, remodeling work for the ceiling cuts, and painting, the gap almost vanished. The track system needed more parts, but it ran on the ceiling surface—no patching, no cutting, no repainting.
That doesn't mean track is always cheaper. What it means is that the lower catalog price disappears in the ceiling.
Conclusion: On a finished ceiling, compare installed cost, not unit price. On a new ceiling, downlights usually have the edge.
Dimension 2: Flexibility and Aiming
This is where GE track lighting earns its keep. A track head is a spotlight light in its most useful form: aim it, tighten it, and move it when the merchandise changes. A recessed downlight is fixed. You can buy a gimbal trim or an adjustable housing, but you're still limited by the hole and the trim angle. A downlight shade can shape the beam and control glare, but it won't change the direction of the beam.
For a space with changing displays—showrooms, galleries, retail floor layouts—track wins almost every time. For corridors, offices and washrooms, a downlight is enough. Using track there is overbuilding.
Conclusion: If the lighting plan will change within the lease term, track's flexibility covers its extra cost. If it won't, downlight.
Honestly, I'm not sure why GE doesn't sell track lighting as a simpler zone kit. My best guess is that every layout needs different track lengths and head spacing, so a fixed bundle would create more exceptions, not fewer.
Dimension 3: Installation, Rework and Grounding
I planned to compare these systems purely by cost, but a 2023 project taught me to check the electrical side first. We had a row of old junction boxes with no ground wire. The inspector told us the same thing I need to say here.
How to ground a light fixture with no ground wire
If the junction box contains no ground wire, you cannot simply connect the fixture's ground wire to a mounting screw and call it done. Under NEC 250.110, exposed metal parts of lighting equipment need an equipment grounding path. If the metal box itself is grounded—through conduit or a separate conductor—you can attach the fixture's ground wire to the box's ground screw. If the box is plastic and the branch circuit has no ground, you need to run an equipment grounding conductor back to the panel or use a listed double-insulated fixture. Or call an electrician. That last option is part of my TCO formula now.
Track lighting can make this easier because the track rail includes a continuous grounding conductor and the standard installation uses a grounded junction box. A recessed downlight is not nearly as forgiving when the box is tight and the wires are short. But track won't rescue you from an ungrounded branch circuit. It does not create a ground where none exists.
And this is where a communication failure cost us money. I said 'check the box for ground continuity.' The installer heard 'the boxes are all grounded.' We found out during inspection—$1,100 in repeat labor and a week of schedule slip. That's the kind of line item nobody includes in a catalog comparison.
Conclusion: For old buildings, verify the grounding path before you choose the fixture. Track is usually easier to install and inspect; a downlight can hide the problem in the ceiling.
Dimension 4: Maintenance and Replaceability
Downlight maintenance has moved from changing lamps to changing the whole module. Integrated LED downlights are efficient, but when a driver fails in year five, you may be replacing the complete fixture. A track head is smaller and easier to replace, and you keep the rail and the feed. That matters if you're tracking costs over a multi-year contract.
The GE Lighting catalog offers separate track heads and LED lamps, which gives you a lower-cost replacement path. I should add that this is not true for every integrated downlight. Some have replaceable drivers, but the labor to access them in a ceiling is often higher than the part cost.
Conclusion: Track wins on replaceability. Downlight wins on clean ceiling design. For long-term TCO, I lean toward track in spaces where fixtures take abuse.
Oh, and don't forget dimming. GE's smart lighting controls add another layer to the TCO. The cheapest fixture can become expensive if it needs a separate dimmer or smart module. Verify compatibility before you standardize.
Which Should You Buy? Depends on the Ceiling and the Next Five Years
If I'm putting together another procurement recommendation, I don't ask 'track or downlight?' I ask 'will this layout still be correct in five years?'
- Choose GE track lighting when: the space has ceiling displays or changeable layouts, you need to aim accents, or you're on a finished ceiling where cutting is expensive.
- Choose recessed downlights when: the layout is permanent, the design wants a clean ceiling, or the project is new construction with open joists.
That's been my experience across warehouses, retail stores and offices. A lighting designer with a color-rendering priority might choose differently.
