- Consider the heat. Even low-heat LEDs produce some warmth in a confined track head. If the paint can't handle it, you're looking at peeling, discoloration, and a messy redo. I'll gladly pay for the standard black finish now—it's more durable than any field-applied paint.
- Cost the whole thing, not just the paint job. The cheapest fix is to order the right finish from the factory. A field modification always costs more when you factor in labor, risk, and redo potential. Always spec the final finish upfront. It might cost $20 more per fixture, but that's nothing compared to the cost of fixing it later.
I still get asked this question about once a quarter—usually by GCs who are trying to save a few hundred dollars on a large order. My standard reply now is: "We can look into it, but the standard finish is more reliable. If you go custom, we need to test a sample first." That usually stops the conversation. Most people want the paint job until they hear about the heat issues. Then they change their mind.
