I Thought I Had This Figured Out
In March 2023, I signed off on a plan for a small café renovation. Fifty recessed lights. Standard 4-inch LED trims. A few dimmers. The electrician quoted three days of work. Easy, right?
Wrong.
The install itself wasn't the problem. The problem was that the client wanted every row of lights on a different zone. One for the counter area, one for the seating, one for the accent wall. And they wanted them all controlled from one spot—a wall panel by the register.
That's when I learned the difference between installing a light fixture and installing a lighting system. And the difference, as it turns out, is expensive.
The Surface Problem: Is It Hard to Cut the Hole?
If you've ever watched a YouTube tutorial, you know the basics of installing recessed lighting:
- Mark the ceiling joist locations
- Cut a hole with a drywall saw
- Wire it to the nearest junction box
- Snap in the trim
A competent electrician can do one in 10–15 minutes. Average 60–100 per 8-hour shift for a crew. It's not brain surgery. It's just overhead labor and material cost.
So why do people keep asking me if it's hard?
Because they're not actually asking about the hole. They're asking about everything that comes after.
The Real Problem: The Smart Controls
A single dimmable recessed light is a solved problem. You buy a fixture with a built-in driver and pair it with a standard wall dimmer. Done. Cheap. Reliable.
But a whole space with multiple zones, dimming scenes, and a wireless control system? That's a different animal.
Here's the issue: most people think about the fixture, not the control. They pick a nice-looking LED trim, then a dimmer off the shelf at the hardware store, and assume they'll work together. And sometimes they do. But often they don't. The lights flicker at low brightness. The dimmer doesn't play nice with the driver. The pairing process fails.
I once ordered 80 recessed fixtures for a retail space. The electrician installed them all. Then we tried to set up the dimming. The lights behaved unpredictably—some would dim, others would jump to full brightness. The wall panel didn't recognize half the zones. We spent three additional days troubleshooting.
The misstep? I'd selected the fixtures and the controls from different manufacturers. They weren't designed to talk to each other.
The Smart Fix: GE Cync and Zigbee

The whole thing cost less than the original plan. And it worked. No flickering. No pairing issues. The client could control all zones from the wall panel or their phone.
The Cost of Getting It Wrong
That retail project with the incompatible fixtures? It cost an extra $1,200 in electrician overtime plus a week of delay. The client was not happy.
Missed deadlines in commercial projects are expensive. According to a 2023 study from the US Department of Energy, improper installation and lack of system integration account for 12% of total lighting energy waste in commercial buildings. But the bigger cost is reputational. If your lights don't work right on opening day, your client remembers.
I now budget 20% of my lighting budget for controls. Not optional. Because a great fixture with bad controls is worse than a mediocre fixture with good controls.
When You Want Certainty
If you're planning a commercial or industrial lighting project, and you have a deadline, here's my advice: don't piece together a system. Choose a platform and stick with it. GE's Cync line is one option. Other companies like Lutron or Leviton have theirs. But the principle is the same—use components that are designed to work together.
Is it hard to install recessed lighting? No. The hole is easy. The wiring is standard. What's hard is making it all work together in a system that actually delivers what you need: reliable, controllable, and simple.
