  • Task areas (kitchenettes, workstations with cabinets overhead, repair benches): GE LED under cabinet lighting is the standard go-to. It throws focused light right where someone's working, without the glare you get from a ceiling fixture.
  • General room lighting: recessed downlight light fixtures. That category spans retrofit trims to full housings, and the right choice depends on your ceiling type. Suspended tile ceilings and drywall hold different housing types.
  • Accent and display areas: a wireless spotlight. No new wiring, no electrician, just battery or plug-in power. For lobby art or display cases, they're a no-brainer.

Step 4: Check the Specs Before You Check Out

Skip the spec sheet and you're gambling. This is the step most people rush past because it's the least fun part of buying lights. But with LEDs, you can't grab "a 60-watt bulb" and call it done. Wattage alone doesn't tell you what you need to know.

Three numbers matter:

  • Lumens, not watts. For office under-cabinet lighting, 400–800 lumens per fixture usually works. For downlights, 800–1200 is a common office range.
  • Color temperature. 2700–3000K is warm, 3500–4500K is neutral, 5000K+ is cool daylight. Pick one range for the open office and stick with it. Mixing warm and cool light in the same room looks like a mistake even when it was intentional.
  • CRI (Color Rendering Index). For areas where employees inspect materials or match colors, 90+ CRI is worth the premium.

Also worth keeping in mind: per FTC advertising guidelines, manufacturers must be able to substantiate claims like "lasts 25,000 hours" or "saves 80% energy." The claims have to be truthful and backed by evidence. That gives me a baseline of confidence, but I still treat spec sheets as a starting point. Step 5: Verify Dimming and Control Compatibility

This is where LED projects go to die. An LED fixture and an LED dimmer don't automatically work together. The driver in the fixture has to match the dimmer's compatibility range. Get it wrong and you get humming, flickering, or lights that won't turn off.

If you're adding smart controls—GE's Cync system, Zigbee automation, anything in that direction—the compatibility question gets bigger. Step 6: Plan the Order, the Delivery, and the Install

When you order through the official channel, check whether items ship from stock or are special order. Stock items usually leave within days. Special-order products—bulk commercial quantities, non-standard color temperatures—can take weeks.

That math is useful for spec sheets and small parts, but a pallet of downlight trims gets negotiated separately with the distributor. Two questions to answer before clicking submit:

  • Will anyone be on-site to receive the delivery? A load of fixtures left at an unattended dock is a theft risk and a weather risk.
  • Is the installer scheduled? If the electrician isn't booked, the lights can sit in boxes for two weeks. Book the labor before the product ships.

Common Mistakes (and What to Do Instead)

Don't buy the cheapest option for commercial spaces. This was true fifteen years ago, and it's still true. A commercial-grade LED from GE Lighting may be rated for 50,000 hours while a bargain brand dies in a fraction of that. The savings disappear the first time you pay an electrician to swap a failed unit.

Keep every invoice. In 2024, we had a small batch of fixtures with a flicker issue. Because I had the original purchase order on file, the warranty claim took about two weeks. Without paperwork, warranty claims turn into he-said-she-said with the distributor.

Buy one spare. A six-fixture job? Order seven. The cost of one spare is tiny next to the cost of expediting a single unit after an installation mishap. (A fixture can crack during install even when nobody's careless.)

Test one before installing everything. The third time we installed a full floor of lights without sampling one first, I finally made it a rule: plug in one unit, check brightness and color, test it with the dimmer, then schedule the rest of the install.
